St Giles Hill Private Garden

Winchester, Hampshire

The fundamental purpose of any landscape design endeavor is the creation of a space that is tailored to the user, to the client. Here we were asked to provide a setting for a substantial pool and associated terraces, the garden became the principal outlook for those enjoying the pool or occupying the spaces in and around the pool pavilion. This proposal reaches a little further than functional considerations of access and outlook.

The proposals provide a compositional balance between the architectural intervention and the remaining garden and to balance both against the elegant proportions of the Edwardian home. Planting is central to the overarching narrative of this garden, where the typical planting typologies and their purpose control the composition of the space, in enclosure and privacy and importantly the coherence of the new space where existing building, the new pool and the garden can be seen as a single and unified design proposition.
