Chilcombe Private Rural Garden
Winchester, Hampshire
3la were appointed to provide landscape design services for the planning application of this replacement detached house on the edge of Winchester, within the South Downs National Park.
The garden design concept seeks to embed the contemporary architectural proposals into the surrounding rural context of the site. The naturalistic and organic design rationale has been strongly driven by the sensitive nature of the site which is located within the South Downs National Park.
On entry to the site, the sweeping driveway will be flanked by colourful perennial and ornamental grass species adding colour and sensory qualities amidst the dramatic canopy of the existing multi-stem Ash tree. Meandering meadow grass with reinforced native shrub planting will blend into the existing developed boundary vegetation, whilst a species rich lawn will surround the extents of the dwelling. Formal garden terrace areas to the southern and eastern corners of the development will provide seating and entertaining spaces from sunrise to sunset. Trees have been suitably positioned to the southern boundary of the site to maintain and frame long distance views across the landscape towards the Grade I listed church. A dense cluster of trees has been proposed to the south eastern corner of the site to reinforce the boundary to the neighbouring property and to further screen vehicular noise from the M3 motorway.
