St Cross Private Garden

Winchester, Hampshire

3la were appointed for landscape and garden design services for the replacement dwelling in the St Cross area of Winchester.

The garden's design is significantly shaped by the architectural theme of the development, inspired by the 'Arts & Crafts' movement. Site-specific conditions, including level changes, orientation, and the natural mature woodland to the north and south, played a pivotal role in the garden's layout. The site's natural setting helps to integrate the architecture into its environment, which is further enhanced by the landscape and garden design.

The garden's simple formal design, inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement, offers intimate pathways and resting spots throughout. Lush beds of naturalistic planting border the rear garden, softening its edges. From the double-height dining room windows, one can enjoy unobstructed views down the garden to a rustic shelter by a peaceful water feature. The sunken kitchen terrace in the southeast corner, under an oak pergola, provides an ideal setting for evening entertainment. The mature ornamental Magnolia tree in the southwest corner serves as a serene backdrop for quiet reflection, with views back towards the house and garden.
